The Secret to Happiness Lies in the Simplest Yet Most Challenging Change

To be happy, there is one very important thing you need to change in your life.

There is one thing all humans have in common: we all seek happiness. We try different ways to achieve it, but sometimes we miss the real key to what might be preventing us from feeling that much-desired fulfillment. It can be something as simple as constantly trying to please others.

If you're one of those people who, at work, keep taking on tasks to help your colleagues even though you're already busy. Or, if you agree to accompany a friend somewhere despite having little time for yourself. Or, if you simply avoid giving your opinion to avoid contradicting others, you are preventing yourself from being happy.

When these situations occur and we always act according to what we think others want, instead of what we desire, we become the kind of people whose lives are based on pleasing others. On the surface, it seems like something that can give us peace and tranquility because we are avoiding conflicts, but in the long run, we will feel burned out and have a certain resentment towards others.

This happens because we care too much about what others think and don't want them to be upset with us. Sometimes, we even tend to get too involved in the problems of people we care about, trying to solve them, even when it’s not our life. This way, we end up becoming the person everyone turns to when they are suffering or in trouble, regardless of how we feel.

We often regret not giving our opinion when we should, or we feel afraid of disappointing others or guilty when we dare to say no. In the end, we become the last option on our own list of priorities.

This behavior is usually learned in childhood and is very difficult to reverse, but there are different ways to educate ourselves to do so and achieve that complete happiness.

How to Prioritize Ourselves

Learning to Say No
We know it's difficult, but we really need to reflect on what we want in every situation. If we feel that something is not appealing or suitable for us, we must recognize that we have the option to say no without it being a problem in our relationships.

Setting Boundaries
Sometimes, we need to set boundaries to protect ourselves, our values, and our priorities. We should take some time to analyze which areas of our life need these boundaries and reinforce them. This can be as simple as not answering emails outside of work hours.

Being the Center of Our Own Life
Prioritizing our needs doesn’t have to be a selfish act, especially if we’ve been avoiding it our entire life. We should consciously think about how things and other people's actions make us feel, what our values are, and what path we want to follow in life, without paying attention to the opinions of those around us.

Always Remembering Our Values
Our priorities will always be dictated by our personal values and what matters most to us. Everything we do should align with them. If something we're asked to do goes against what we believe, we have the right to refuse. In the end, those values will guide us in making decisions.

Helping others and being their support when they need it is good, but it doesn't have to mean neglecting ourselves or ignoring our own needs. To achieve happiness, we must find a balance and make ourselves a priority.
